Why I Love Ghost Stories By Morgan Brice
I’ve loved ghost stories since I was a kid. They were always a shivery kind of fun that made me scared in all the right ways. I read all the books about ghosts at the library, and I’m always looking for good new regional books when I travel.
Some people say that ghost stories are how we collectively remember people who weren’t important for the history books but who held a notable place—for good or bad—in local memory. I think there’s some truth to that—a lot of people who become the ghosts in the tales aren’t wealthy or powerful. Some of the stories are cautionary tales, warnings not to wander around a night or accept rides from strangers or pick up hitchhikers. And some I think were built for the sheer love of scaring the pants of people around a campfire.
I also enjoy seeing how the kernel of a story—like a Woman in White or a Phantom Hitchhiker—gets changed from place to place over the years. Many of these stories have been around for a long time because something speaks to us about them and we don’t want to let them go.
I love ghost stories for all those reasons, and because it’s fun to scare myself when I know I’m safe at home with the lights on and the doors locked! What are your favorite scary stories?
