It's been a rough couple of years for Marek Hafer, roaming hockey protagonist and pugilistic expert. Ending up in Berger Lake, Pennsylvania, on a financially unstable minor league team might just be the ending his wretched career deserves. On the other side of thirty, Marek knows his time on skates is dwindling. His goal now is to spend a few quiet years playing for the Berger Lake Badgers, knock a few helmets together as needed, and then call it quits before his salty personality gets him booted out of hockey permanently.

After a bloody encounter his first night on the ice, the Badgers coach suggests that Marek find a way to lower his violent tendencies before he’s sent packing yet again. That decree leads Marek to knock on the door of his next-door neighbor, Shey Pierson, the owner of Sun Touch Yoga Studio. Shey ticks every box Marek has with his soft blue eyes, flowing golden hair, and long limber legs. The only problem is that Shey is yin to Marek’s yang.

Can a man famed for throwing punches find serenity in the arms of a man known for his tranquil ways?

Blurb

Tom can’t catch a break when it comes to his love life. He’s not good with romance, as his exes told him in uncharitable terms, and he’s starting to wonder if there’s something wrong with him. So when he finds himself attracted to his temporary roommate, he’s afraid of being called inadequate all over again.

Alex has serious anxiety which make his life a challenge and his dating prospects slim to nonexistent. He assumes Tom isn’t interested in him because men never are. It’s a pleasant surprise to start a friends with benefits relationship, so Alex goes out on a limb in an attempt to impress Tom. When it backfires spectacularly, he thinks all hope is lost.

Both men are held back by past rejections. Will a minor crisis bring them together ... or tear them apart?

Excerpt

This is undoubtedly the stupidest thing I’ve ever done to impress a guy.

“Go ahead, start it up,” said Tom.

Alex took a deep breath and turned the key. Tom’s truck roared to life. No such luck as a fortuitously-timed engine malfunction. Though he shouldn’t think such things, as Tom was only being nice and wishing expensive repairs on him was hardly fair.

He looked around trepidatiously. The parking lot really was almost deserted, with only a few vehicles parked and those much closer to the doors. He wondered what role those people played in the postal service that required them to work on Sundays, then realized the line of thought was just a mental delay.

“You’re not going to cause any damage,” said Tom. If he was impatient, it didn’t come across in his voice.

“Your brakes are in good order, right?”

“Yes. The truck just passed inspection last month with no problems at all.”

It was a valiant attempt to make Alex feel better, and he appreciated the intent even though it failed.

The brake pedal went down smoothly under his foot. Such a small little piece of metal, and it could be a matter of life or death. Did people who worked at brake factories realize how much trust was being placed in them every single day?

Once he had that all-important device pressed firmly against the floor, he reached for the gear shift. The first notch down put the truck in neutral, the second in drive.

“Now ease up on the brake,” Tom said, remarkably cavalier about putting his safety, not to mention his vehicle, in the hands of a man who couldn’t drive.

Nothing happened when he lightened his touch on the brake as instructed. Maybe it was a sign. Alex had never believed in such things, but he was willing to consider the possibility.

“Wow, you had it stomped all the way down, huh? Okay, let it go. Take your time so you’re comfortable.”

As if that will ever happen.

“How about less terrified? I believe in setting realistic goals.”

“Sure. Whatever works. Just remember, there’s nobody around us, so you can’t do much damage.”

“I could drive into a light pole,” countered Alex, not because he was trying to be ornery, but suddenly concerned about damaging Tom’s truck. Those poles were stuck into cement, a material not known for being kind to vehicles.

“I’m not worried.”

Well, that made one of them. Alex eased up on the brake a bit more, but nothing happened aside from a vague sense of power waiting to be unleashed, though that could have been his imagination.

“Good,” said Tom. “Now give it some gas.”

If I crash into a light pole, he can’t say I didn’t warn him.

Of course he knew the truck was an inanimate object and thus had no feelings. All the same, it seemed as though the massive beast was eager to move, and it lurched forward when he pressed on the gas pedal just the slightest bit. He wasted no time in going back to the nice, safe brake.

“Not bad. Try again, and let it go a little more.”

Alex tried to ignore the churning in his stomach and nervous sweat rolling down the back of his neck, and he depressed the gas pedal again.

This time, the truck moved a good six feet forward before he threw down the brake. The parking lot was beginning to spin around him, something which hadn’t happened in years, and suddenly the truck’s ventilation system seemed entirely insufficient.

“That was good,” said Tom. “A little jerky on the brake, but with practice ...”

He was still talking, but Alex didn’t hear a word because he was trying to get his traitorous body to obey him for once. It wasn’t working.

Five years since he’d last had a panic attack, half a decade, and he recognized the oncoming storm as though it had been five days. His heart raced, he struggled to breath, and if he’d eaten recently he’d probably be on the verge of throwing up. Most of all, the whole world raged around him, out of his control while he couldn’t even manage his own physiological response to stress.

Never mind driving, at this point he’d have happily settled for not breaking down in front of Tom, but he knew it was too late for that. Once a panic attack started, there was no cutting it off.

So much for making a good impression.

Some kids have imaginary friends. Not content with that, I dreamed up an imaginary village, and I never stopped, though these days my stories feature a lot more hot men.

I love a rich fictional universe as much as a happy ending, and I have a tendency to get so lost in worlds of my own creation that I have to rush out at the door the last minute in a panic, desperately hoping I don't hit too many red lights.

Other ways to describe me: avid reader; chocoholic; historian; sci-fi geek; proud New Englander; koala lover; travel enthusiast.

Cayuga Cougars Series

Book #1 - Snap Shot - Amazon US | Amazon UK
Book #2 - Open Net - Amazon US | Amazon UK
Book #3 - Coach's Challenge - Amazon US | Amazon UK
Book #4 - Overtime - Amazon US | Amazon UK

Blurb

The past few years have been a bit chaotic for Cougars new associate coach, Lancaster Hart. After an amiable divorce he began living his life as the gay man he’d kept closeted for far too long. With the recent move to Cayuga, he’s away from his support system and properly made sweet tea. Despite a roster filled with new friends and associates, he’s spending his nights alone.

As his team gears up to make a run at the Calder Cup, Lancaster discovers that not everything in upstate New York is wine, woodlands, and chilly conservative ideals. At a summer music festival, he first lays eyes on Townsend Harris, folksy/blues singer by night and mayoral office assistant by day. Lancaster is enraptured with the man’s powerful sultry voice. Also, Town just might be the most beautiful man he has seen in all his forty-one years.

The two hit it off at an informal meet and greet after the show, where they spend the night talking and sipping wine. One evening of conversation and an incendiary goodbye kiss leads them into a scorching love affair that might be exactly what Lancaster has been searching for his whole life. Can his team pull off professionally what he’s hoping to do privately as well? Or will capturing their dream evade both the Cougars and Lancaster?

My Two Pennies' Worth

This is the final book in the series and I have to admit I've read all five (and a half, because of the Christmas short) this year. That means I've not had the time to lose the thread of the team's ongoing attempt to lift the Calder Cup or lose track of the characters.
The previous books of the series have had some pretty heavy subject matter and this final book is a nice change of pace. This book is fast paced with the hockey action but that frenetic energy is left on the ice. After some controversial and volatile relationships for the team (admittedly among much younger guys) the one between Lancaster and Townsend is sweet and gentle, more mature with much less drama.
This book also sees everything wrapped up tidily for the team that is more like a family, with a catchup for our other couples and that final run for the cup.

A great end to an enjoyable series.

It's back (again). It's Fiction Friday

I bet you thought I buried this segment. I have neglected it somewhat and that's not good, because I read some things that deserve a mention in recent months. This may take a couple of posts.

Awakenings and French Songs by [Iris, Nell]
Awakenings & French Songs by Nell Iris
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Not what I was expecting after reading the first few pages.
Lovely short read.
No steam or angst. This is that perfect moment story. The point in the story when everything sorts itself out. I'd have loved to read a novel length story of these two with all the mutual pining and unrequited love leading up to this moment. But as it is this is a gentle read and provides a suitably sweet epilogue.

Grilled Cheese and Goblins: Adventures of a Supernatural Food Inspector by Nicole Kimberling
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Cherries Worth Getting: An interesting world with two solid leads and a well thought out investigation. Would have loved a longer investigation to stretch out the romance. 4* (This was taken from my review of Irregulars) 2nd read through: Still loved it. In awe of the world building. Glad I've got a whole book of Keith and Gunther to enjoy.

Grilled Cheese and Goblins: Adventures of a Supernatural Food Inspector by [Kimberling, Nicole]Cookie Jambore: 4*

A Christmas Coda that takes place between Cherries Worth Getting & Magically Delicious. This is a sweet and romantic short story that not only shows Keith joining Gunther in one of his regular commitments, but also deals with how the couple decide to move in together.

The Little Golden Book of Goblin Stories: 4*

Gunther has asked Keith to find a special book from his childhood. This cute story reveals how amazing Gunther's Mum is.

Magically Delicious: 4*
Previously released in Charmed and Dangerous.

This story focuses more on Keith than on the relationship. Keith and Gunther are now living together and someone is 'attacking' NIAD agents with pixie-dust. Gunther becomes the 8th agent to be effected. Keith's not the kind of boyfriend to sit by Gunther's hospital bed wringing his hands, so he heads out determined to find out who's behind the attacks. Although Gunther is in the background, Keith's realisations about his relationship are interspersed with his investigation. And there is a lovely scene with Gunther's parents. The leprechauns are great fun, especially the one who becomes Keith's temporary partner/son.

The Most Important Meal of The Day: 4*

Haha. This one is fun and graphically violent with people being ripped in two or eaten by a monster from the sky. Keith and Gunther are the only ones who can save the world, but they're about to have breakfast when the apocalypse strikes.

Bring Out the Best: 4.5*

Keith and Gunther have been living together for a couple of years when Keith starts investigating a case of bad blood being delivered to non-humans. Gunther's cousin comes to stay after being kicked out of the Air Force and spends a lot of time making toast and mooning over the plane he left behind. Gunther saves Keith when he does something stupid, but ultimately it's Keith that solves the case and proves his worth. The relationship is great in this one and it's obvious how much their relationship has thrived in this one. Brilliant ending.

While most of these stories received 4 stars from me, I have to give the overall book 5 stars. The collection shows the overall progress of the relationship and Keith's transformation back into fully functioning human. He's come a long way from the first story. All due to the love of a trans-goblin.

Over and Over Again by [McCade, Cole]

Over and Over Again by Cole McCade
Available in Kindle Unlimited

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Slow, gentle, melancholy, and at times quite heartbreaking.
I have no words. Cole McCade has stolen them all from me.

Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride by [Easton, Eli]
Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride by Eli Easton
Available in Kindle Unlimited

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

OMG, that was the best thing ever. So much fun. Western adventure meets romantic comedy, with a Some Like it Hot vibe. I laughed, I gasped, I cried (goddamit), I fell in love with all the characters.

This is a  brilliant and funny romp through the Old West. I've already added it to my 'comfort listens' list. I can guarantee I'll be back on the old homestead before the year is out.

About The Author

I've been telling stories for as long as I can remember; my parents tell me it's been going on even further back than that and not always at the appropriate times. Now I choose to use my gift for good.

I enjoy meeting new people, even if they're only in my head.

I believe love comes in all different packages and each should be wrapped in a ribbon and cherished.

I'm currently working on a contemporary romance with a splash of suspense. I get a thrill coming up with unexpected and usually dangerous situations for my characters to be in and then thinking of extraordinary ways for them to escape with outcomes that deviate from the expected.

I live with my family in the Northeast where we enjoy white winters, balmy summers, a spring flurried with fragrant flowers, and a fall filled with piles of leaves to dive in to. Our small town offers the old world charm of knowing your neighbor and its location enables us to take off for dinner in a city known for its beautiful skyline or to an afternoon playing in the sand of some of the best beaches found in the United States.

For me, writing is relaxation for the soul and reading is its nourishment.

Freebie Blitz excerpt 1:

I took the letter and worked my pinkie under the flap. Who would my roomie be? I’d given a pretty detailed profile of myself in the application. The guy was surely going to have some of the same interests as me, right? I mean, they had a computer system for this stuff.
In a sudden burst of excitement and confidence I winked at June. “Jeez I hope he’s hot.”
She glanced around my room and gave a small laugh. “Well whoever he is, he’s lucky. You’d be a good roomie. So tidy.” She gazed at her letter again. “They should come with a profile picture. Or at least a last name to Google them. Shoot. I hope Sara will be nice.”
“Don’t worry, she will be. And you can always come hang with me if you don’t like her.”
“Or she doesn’t like me.”
I snorted, scanning over the letter. “Not gonna—”happen, June, I was going to finish. Until I read my soon-to-be-roomie’s name.
Trey.
I frowned, my insides sinking toward my toes. Surely there were like, loads of Trey’s, right? I mean what fucked up coincidence would it be to end up rooming with my sis’s boyfriend? Oh, please don’t let the world be that cruel.
“Well, who is it?”
I swallowed and managed a fake grin. “Funny. His name’s Trey.”
