That is until one of his colleagues goes missing, presumed dead, and Arthur is called upon to take his place in the distant Arab nation of Oman.
It is there upon the shipless oceans of sand that Arthur meets falcon veterinarian Tariq Hassan. And while the desert heat ignites an instant spark between the two men, a clash of cultures could mean their Arabian love affair is over before it’s even begun.
Can two strangers from opposite worlds overcome the Middle East’s tightly-held religious beliefs and find a way to love one another? Excerpt:
As we drove over dunes, the bird in the back remained peaceful and silent, as though the hood or the hum of the car was enough to keep the poor thing calm and collected.
“What happened to her, anyway? The falcon, I mean.”
“Her wing was broken. Someone found her on the side of a mountain road and called me. She was in terrible shape when I took her in. She must have been clipped by something travelling pretty fast. I’ve had her for four months, but now she’s ready to return to her world. She just wants to fly. She just wants to be free.” He glanced at me and added, “Don’t we all?”
“Free? Yes. Fly? Not so much.”
“You don’t like flying?”
“No. It’s a long story.”
“I imagine flying must be an incredible experience. Taking off, soaring over the clouds, watching the earth pass by far below. I can picture it so clearly in my mind.”
“You’ve never flown before?”
Tariq shook his head. “I’ve never left Oman. My life is here. My work is here. My family is here.”
I felt my heart sink a little. So, Tariq had a family. Instantly I had a vision of him with his wife and children at home. Don’t get me wrong, I was happy for him. But I guess my gaydar got a little ahead of itself and got my hopes up in the process.
Not that I had come to Oman looking for company. Far from it.
I suppose I was just momentarily taken aback by those eyes.
Those dimples.
That embrace when he pulled me to my feet and held me steady.
I tried to concentrate on the conversation. “So where exactly are you taking her? The falcon, that is.”
“One of the rocky outcrops. Somewhere with shelter and shade in case she needs to rest her wing. But also a place with rodents and lizards and snakes. She needs to hunt.”
“There are snakes out here?”
“Don’t worry, they’re mostly harmless. Except for the saw-scaled viper. One bite from that snake is enough to kill two people.”
“Seriously?”
“Just stay out of their way and they’ll stay out of yours. Besides, you’ve already got one wound.”
At the mention of it, I touched my fingers to the sticky cut on my temple and winced.
“Don’t touch it,” he warned me. “You’ll get it infected. Let a doctor do the touching.”
“Okay, okay.”
“What are you doing out here anyway? Aside from causing traffic accidents.”
“I’m an arenologist.”
“A what?”
“An arenologist. I study sand, its paths, its patterns, its composition and layers… I’m the life of every dinner party.”
“I imagine you would be.”
“I was kidding.”
“I’m being serious. Sand is fascinating.”
“Thank you… I like to think so. Although you do live in the desert, so I think you’re kind of biased on the subject.”
“You may be right, but nobody can deny that the desert is a spiritual place.”
I raised one eyebrow. “Spiritual? I guess that’s where we differ.”
“How so?”
“When I see the desert, I’m looking at it from a scientific viewpoint.”
He laughed. “So, to you, sand is simply something to study?”
“Yes… and no. There’s actually nothing simple about it. Arenology is one of the few studies that spans several sciences. I’m not only working within the field of geology, but there are many crossovers with chemistry and biology as well. People don’t realise how important sand is to the balance of nature.”
