A world shattered. A hope kindled. A love ignited.

Synopsis:

When life drowns you in lemons, to hell with making lemonade. I wanted to burn the whole world. But eighteen months from the day my life was torn apart, I’m tired of the anger. Tired of the nightmares. Tired of putting one foot in front of the other just trying to survive. Three months on a high country sheep station in the middle of nowhere is precisely the reboot I need. A chance to break free. To breathe again. To find a way forward.

I put my entire life on hold and head south to Mackenzie Country. But falling for the captivating young station boss was never part of the plan. Holden Miller might be smart and sexy and push all my dusty buttons, but we come from two different worlds. I’m not looking for a relationship. I’m not interested in love. I’m done with all that.

But Holden doesn’t care about my rules. Nestled safely in the arms of the spectacular Southern Alps, on an isolated sheep farm at the top of the world, Holden begins knitting my battered heart together one careful stitch at a time. And with every pass of the thread, every braid of the river on our doorstep, I catch a tantalising glimpse of something I’d almost given up on.

Happiness, and maybe even love.

If I have the courage to reach out and grab them.

Note: This book contains references to the past death of a child and PTSD

Excerpt:

“Hang on, Tuck.” I lowered the phone from my ear and squinted at the dusty blue Hilux pulling in at the kerb. It had Miller Station stamped on its door, windows rolled down, and music blaring.

The driver killed the volume, pushed his sunglasses up his nose, and leaned across the passenger seat to speak through the window. “Are you Gil Everton?”

“Yep.” I raised a tentative hand in greeting.

“Cool. I’m Holden Miller. Let’s get you on board.” His full mouth curved up in a high-wattage smile that made my stomach do a weird-arse, vaguely familiar flip.

Oh boy. Attraction. Just freaking dandy. Eighteen months with my libido on military-grade lockdown, and it chose that moment to wake up and get with the program. Not only that, but I already knew Holden was gay from my conversations with Emily. Go fucking figure. It was a wrinkle I sure as hell didn’t need in my reboot plan. I hadn’t been laid since Callie’s death and I wasn’t looking to change that state of affairs anytime soon even if I had been able to summon any interest, which I hadn’t . . . for a while. So, yeah, there was that. Which was why my reaction to any man was . . . surprising.

“Gil, are you still there?” Tuck called through the phone as Holden disappeared back into the cab and the driver’s door opened.

I raised the phone to my ear again. “Yeah, but I’m gonna have to—” I stopped abruptly as a ruggedly handsome dark-haired beauty with a mass of lazy brown waves bouncing around his ears emerged from the Hilux. And since I was a hot mess but not dead, I drew in a sharp breath and whispered, “Wow.”

“What?” Tucker interrupted my gawping. “What wow? Gil?”

I cleared my throat and mumbled. “Nothing. I’ll call you in a day or two. Say hi to Gail and the kids for me.”

“They don’t like you either.”

I laughed. “They love me.”

“Fuck it. You’re right.”

“Bye, Tuck.”

“Wait, Gil. Gil!”

I hung up on Tuck’s protest and shot to my feet, by which time Holden had circled to the back of the Hilux and was busy opening the hatch. It gave me a few seconds to appreciate the way his dusty jeans hugged a pretty spectacular arse, and an equally dusty black T-shirt showed off lean muscular arms sporting a golden tan.

Holden caught my eye and that broad smile widened, no doubt because I was standing there staring at him like a total idiot. “First off, let’s exchange numbers,” he said. “I think you only have Mum’s. I tried to call to say I was running late, but whatever I had in my phone didn’t work.”

“Oh.” Shit. Great way to start. “Yeah, I ah, changed my number, sorry. I updated your mum, but maybe you’ve got my old one.”

“No problem. Here.” He gave me his phone and I corrected the number he had stored and then he sent me a text.

I called him back to make sure we were right, and Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl” rang out through the carpark.

I bit back a smile and raised a brow. “Really? I think I should be offended.”

He chuckled. “Don’t be. Besides, it was before I met you and it kind of fits, right? You’re from the big smoke. You’ve even got your Roberto Cavalli’s on.” He pointed to the label on my jeans and heat rose in my cheeks. “Pretty fancy for a sheep station.”

I narrowed my gaze and fired back, “But you recognised the brand which says you have an eye for those things.”

He grinned. “Of course. They’re a great jean. Just don’t wear them in the woolshed.”

I laughed. “Kind of goes without saying.”

“Are those it?” He nodded to four bags of varying sizes siting in a tidy line at my feet.

I gave a mute nod, because I was well-educated like that, and wiped my hot palms down the front of my jeans.

“Great.” He sauntered over in that loose-gaited way perfected by many farmers like they had all the time in the world. About a metre away, he stopped, lifted his glasses onto his head, and a pair of dark coffee-brown almost black eyes locked with mine.

And just, damn. I was in trouble.

Then he smiled. “Welcome to Mackenzie Country, Gil.”

Philadelphia Power, Book 1

Jalen Daniels loves his job as a hockey coach to kids in the Philadelphia Power’s youth league. Coaching in the same league he played in and volunteering his time to a charity that brings the game to underserved communities takes up a lot of his time. The rest is filled with playing hockey in a rec league and bouncing at a nightclub. Meeting Leif Larsson, star player for the Power and father of one of the kids he coaches, knocks Jalen's busy life off balance and leaves him craving Philly's favorite Swede.

Philadelphia Power defenseman Leif Larsson has devoted the last four years to being a dad and a hockey player, in that order. Focusing on being the best dad for his daughter and the best teammate and player for the team was all that mattered. But when he sees Jalen at a charity event, their connection is strong enough to push his heart into pursuing the talented, surprising, handsome man.

Amid the bustle of hockey season, the sparks between Jalen and Leif ignite into something bigger and brighter than they’ve ever experienced. But navigating a relationship when their conflicting schedules make meeting up close to impossible is harder on their hearts than they anticipated. Can they find a way to score a win for love?

Excerpt:

At one table, retired players sign autographs. Another table has a handful of current Power players, laughing and teasing. We’re lucky the current players were available to join us, since their season opener is only two days away. The start of October has always been one of my favorite times of year because pro hockey is back and I’m filled with anticipation for all the possibilities that await my favorite team.

At the last table sits Leif Larsson, one of the Power’s defensemen. I sigh and bring my fingertips to my lips, covertly checking for any spital as I drool over him. He’s incredibly droolworthy with his head turned up as he talks to their starting goalie, Sawyer Garcia, and a representative from the charity, Hockey Included, which is the reason we’re here.

There are many hockey greats present. But I can’t take my eyes off Leif. Long legs in dark-washed jeans are bent at the knees, almost hitting the underside of the table as he leans forward when a small boy approaches. He says something to the boy—whose eyes round to the size of hockey pucks—as Leif signs a picture and the child’s stuffed Philly Power mascot, Striker. His languid smile paired with the tussled copper-colored hair make him look like he’s just rolled out of bed after a night filled with filthy talk and orgasms.

Thinking of those legs draped over my shoulders while I swallow down what’s between them sends a tingle to the base of my spine. A smack on my biceps interrupts the inappropriately timed fantasy. I gaze down to see my best friend and assistant coach.

You made it.”

“There was an accident on 95.” Monet scrunches her pierced brow. “You’d think no one has ever seen an accident.” Her hands wave and gesticulate as she speaks. I’ve been unintentionally smacked in the face more than once, so I take a step back. “Cars crushed, police on the scene, everyone standing around… Move on, people. There’s nothing any of us can do, so why must we rubberneck?”

I grunt my agreement. Monet is no nonsense, which is one reason we clicked so well the first time we coached together in the Philly Power Youth League. Five years later, we’re still coaching together, and there isn’t anyone else I’d rather work with.

I continue to watch the throngs of kids and adults as they line up for a chance to chat with their favorite players. “Looks like a good turnout.”

Monet was one of the driving forces in preparing the application to get the charity organization to Philly. Now, kids in communities that are unable to afford hockey have the opportunity to play and experience it. She stands on her toes and pushes her body into me. “Who are we looking at?”

“No one.” I blink and glance down at her, embarrassed that she’s caught me so blatantly ogling the father of a kid on our Pre-Mite team.

“Right…” She doesn’t believe my lame words, not that I thought she would. “Oh, I see.”

She drops back onto her leopard-print ballet flats. “Leif Larsson is pretty. I keep hoping he’ll pick up Thea one day so I can see him up close and personal.”

“Me too.” As the words leave my mouth, the man we’re gawking at turns his head like he can feel us staring at him. When his azure eyes collide with mine, I’m assaulted with want and desire so great I’m set to steal him away to a dark corner. Kissing and touching until he’s panting for me to take him. Our gazes hold for a split second before the corner of his mouth tips, flirty and provocative. When I wet my lips, the left corner of his mouth joins the right. The slight lift of his brows is an open invitation before the next person in line snatches his attention.

I have one rule to live by: Don't Date a DILF.

I've seen the consequences of blurring the boundaries between teaching and dating, and I am not about to take that kind of risk.

But I didn’t count on Hunter Rhodes walking into my school. Never expected that the broad-shouldered, stubble-jawed, absolute glory of a man would be such a sweet and caring father. Or that as a seemingly straight man, he might decide he wants me.

If my Nana has her way...I'll be in love with someone by the end of the school year, but there's only one man who tempts me.

With her matchmaking becoming overwhelming and half the single women in Granville setting their sights on Hunter, we're both feeling the pressure. Faking a relationship could get everyone off our backs.

It seems like fun and games for Hunter, but separating pretend feelings from real won't be so simple for me. And then there's that rule...

Can I date a DILF without disaster—or will all my fears come true?

Don't Date a DILF is Book 1 of Rules We Break, a spin-off series from Games We Play, set in the small, quirky town of Granville, where nosy residents meddle in one another's lives, great friendships are made, and silly innuendos are a way of life.

My Two Pennies' Worth

This is Kevin's brother, Hunter's, story. Hunter returned to Granville during Kevin's story, a single Dad returning home after an unwanted split with his wife. Now a year has passed, he's divorced and his 10 year old is living with him. And a newly single man in the small town means fresh meat for all the single ladies.

His response, to start fake dating the local high school teacher. A man.

This is similar to Kevin's story in that it's an older man discovering (and embracing) a new side to his sexuality but that's where the similarities end. Kevin's story is sassy and joyful and I read it without a care. Hunter's story gave me low level anxiety from about 70%, issues with the ex-wife, the kid's reaction to their 'real' relationship, and the problem at Clark’s old school that had sent him scurrying home.

* small town

* age gap

* bisexual awakening

* kids

* teacher

First of a new series but plenty of friends, old and new, to meet.

Clark’s voice filtered in from the hallway.

“Nana, for the last time, I was trying… Yeah, well, maybe I should run all your proposed dates through my friends first if you think Percy Helix was a good choice!”

I smirked at his sass, then had to muffle a laugh when he followed it up with, “No, I’m not being sassy. I’m sorry, Nana.”

Fuck, that was adorable.

Clark was a grown man who had his shit together far more than I ever would, and yet here he was, getting scolded by his grandmother. There was something so sweet and wholesome about that.

He glanced toward the classroom and caught sight of me through the doorway. He held up one finger, in the universal sign to wait a minute.

“We can talk more later, Nana. I have a parent here for a meeting, okay? But I really don’t think another setup is a good idea… Because I don’t. Because it’s uncomfortable!” He groaned theatrically. “Yes, okay, we’ll talk later.”

He lowered the phone and turned toward me.

I winced. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to eavesdrop.”

He shrugged. “Well, you were at the pub, so…not like you didn’t know already.”

“Your nana feels pretty strongly about setting you up with a date, huh?”

“Unfortunately.”

“My mother hassles me every time we talk too,” I said.

“Must be something in the water,” Clark said with a pout.

Still adorable.

“Yeah, I actually lost my cool at work. Yelled at Tucker about how everyone in this town wants me to date. You know what we should do?”

“What?”

“Go on a date together.” I laughed. “That would shut everyone up.”

Clark’s eyes widened. “I think it would do the opposite.”

“You know what I mean though. Can’t set up a couple of guys who are already dating.” I wiggled my eyebrows. “Genius, right?”

Read Around the Rainbow - A.I. vs. Me

It's that time again when the Read Around the Rainbow group get together to discuss the topic of the month. It comes around so fast!

Often we decide on a topic and any gossip in the group chat is just that. But this topic has had the group chat buzzing away.

That's hardly a surprise, AI is a contentious topic among most creatives and educators. This time last year, if you'd mentioned AI, most of the outcry would have come from artists. I follow as many artists as authors on the blue birdy app these days and they been making noise about AI for ages.

But with the launch of ChatGPT in November 22 suddenly our words are under threat. From the current Hollywood writers strike to the problems faced by educators with AI written papers. It's writing copy on blogs, copy that will be picked up by other AI searches and regurgitated back to us.

But authors will be fine, yes? No. Amazon is already selling books written by AI. AI that can take our written words and use them against us. And that's all without mentioning the ethics and legality of data mining. Or how AI can marginalise and deny minorities.

So, we decided to conduct an experiment. Write 300 words (or thereabouts), then feed the same parameters into an AI writing program and compare the results.

The Great AI Experiment.

Write a 400-word gay romance story in past tense, first person point-of-view, about a meetcute where two men meet in a London market. The narrator is a market trader who sells bric-a-brac, the other man is a nurse browsing his stall. Nurse seems plain until the sun comes out and hits him just right. Include at least 150 words of dialogue.

Sample 1

I stood behind my market stall, surrounded by an assortment of bric-a-brac. The London market buzzed with activity, shoppers meandering through the stalls, searching for hidden treasures. It was a typical day until he walked into my life.

A man in a plain white shirt and trousers wandered over to my stall. His eyes flickered with curiosity as he examined the trinkets displayed before him. There was something unassuming about him, but I couldn't help but feel drawn to his presence.

"Can I help you find anything in particular?" I asked, breaking the silence.

He looked up, his eyes meeting mine. "Oh, no, thank you. I'm just browsing. You have quite an interesting collection here."

I smiled, appreciating his polite response. "I try to offer a little bit of everything. Let me know if anything catches your eye."

He continued to peruse the items on display, occasionally picking up an item and inspecting it. The sun was hidden behind the clouds, casting a dull light over the market. But then, as if on cue, a ray of sunlight broke through, illuminating his face.

The sudden burst of light transformed him. His plain features were bathed in a warm glow, his eyes sparkling like two jewels. It was as if the sun itself had chosen him, highlighting his true beauty for the world to see.

I couldn't help but comment on the transformation. "You know, I never noticed it before, but the sunlight brings out something extraordinary in you."

He chuckled, a hint of blush coloring his cheeks. "Well, I suppose I have the sun to thank for that."

We continued to chat, our conversation flowing effortlessly like an old friendship rekindled. He shared stories of his work as a nurse, the challenges and rewards he faced, while I regaled him with tales of the curious items I had collected over the years. Our dialogue danced between lighthearted banter and genuine moments of connection.

As the afternoon sun began to wane, he thanked me for the pleasant conversation. "I should be on my way, but it was lovely talking to you. Your stall brightened my day."

I couldn't let him go so easily. "Wait, before you leave, let me give you something as a token of our meeting."

I reached under the stall and retrieved a small, intricately designed pendant. I placed it gently in his hand, our fingers brushing for a fleeting moment. "May this pendant bring you the same radiance that the sun bestowed upon you today."

His eyes widened in surprise and gratitude. "Thank you. I'll cherish it."

We exchanged smiles, an unspoken connection lingering in the air between us. As he turned to leave, I couldn't resist but ask, "Would you like to meet again? Maybe for a cup of tea or a stroll in the park?"

His smile brightened, mirroring the sunlight that had transformed him earlier. "I would love that. Here, let me give you my number."

As he walked away, I watched him blend into the crowd, the pendant glimmering in the sunlight. Our unexpected encounter in the London market had kindled a flame of curiosity and possibility. And as the market continued its lively symphony, I couldn't help but look forward to the next chapter of our story, guided by the warmth of the sun and the serendipity of connection.

Sample 2

I swear there was nothing special about the guy browsing the bric a brac and ‘maybe someday’ antiques on my stall at Chatsworth Road market. A dishevelled, dishwater blond in an olive green puffa jacket with dark circles under his eyes. Nothing remarkable.

Then the cloud that had been threatening rain for the last half hour shifted and a shaft of sunlight hit him.

Just.

Right.

I could almost hear the choir of heavenly angels as it bathed him in a warm glow. Honest. No word of a lie. Skin a healthy olive tone that spoke of a Mediterranean heritage somewhere in his lineage. Far, far back if his hair was any indication. What I’d taken for dishwater blond was threaded with varying shades of yellow and gold that the sun caught just right, glinting and gleaming. Catching my attention like a magpie with shiny shit. And in that moment I wanted to pluck that man and line my nest with him.

My nest being the small double in my pokey flat filled with more stock than furniture and pluck… well, you get the analogy I’m sure.

Between blinks, a halo of rainbow colours had appeared, refracted from beads of moisture that clung to the silk fine strands.

He was stunning. Despite the drab lumpy coat. And the pinch between his eyebrows. The worried twist of his lips.

Damn, I was staring. And creeping him out if that expression was any indication. So I plastered on my winning smile and cranked up cheeky chappy market trader to the max.

“That desperate to get to the market that you didn’t have time to dry your hair?” I blurted. That wasn’t what I’d intended to say. And rather than cover my embarrassment I only made it worse. Especially when I channelled my Nan—my Mum couldn’t have given a shit—and tacked on, “You’ll catch your death coming out in this weather with wet hair.”

His snort of laughter seemed to catch him by surprise and he lifted a hand to his lips as though to try to keep it in. Too late. The inelegant sound had already escaped to the ether, catching me square in the chest as it did so.

“Ah, yes. Desperate to see what tat you had on your stall today.”

I knew sarcasm when I heard it and that was dripping in it. It also had a refinement to it that screamed posh schools and money, or at least the outward appearance of such, tempered by the softness of a honeyed accent. Greece or one of the islands thereabout, maybe.

Hang on. He’d been to my stall before? I didn’t recall seeing him. And surely I’d remember such a stunning creature. I narrowed my eyes, desperate to place him. The cloud shifted again, hiding the sun once more and from one blink to the next the guy returned to plain and ordinary. Easy to miss.

I squinted hard. There it was, that shine that seemed to be just under the surface. Dulled somehow, but still there just waiting to be discovered. And now I knew, well, I couldn’t really un-see it.

Unaware of my inner turmoil he gestured to his hair. “That’s an old wives tale. You can’t get ill going out with wet hair. Unless it’s below freezing, of course.” He ran long, strong looking fingers through his hair and I swear the strands glowed a little as they passed through. “My last patient projectile vomited on me. I had to shower before I left the hospital.”

Night shift. That explained dark smudges and the general air of exhaustion. “Doctor?”

“Nurse.” He gave a self-deprecating smile. “Not as glamorous.”

I wanted to soothe that expression. Slap down whoever had caused it to appear. “Just as important, but more caring and lower paid.”

“I doubt my father would agree with you. He’s a consultant. With an office in Harley Street.”

Dad needed a slap. And it was time to change the subject. “So, which item of my tat takes your fancy.”

He grinned and indicated to a hideous side table.

🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖

Which is the AI?

I'd like to think that anyone who has read even one of my stories would pick mine out of the two.

But before I confirm your suspicions there's a few points I'd like to discuss.

I had to play about with prompt to get anywhere vaguely similar to my piece. The first try had no dialogue whatsoever. You had to ask it to add dialogue. When I didn't specify the type of market trader AI became unnaturally obsessed with fruit and veg.

"...Your stall has such a lovely array of fresh produce."

I chuckled. "Well, thank you. I take pride in offering the best. Any particular fruit or vegetable catching your eye?"

He pondered for a moment before pointing at a bunch of ripe strawberries. "Those strawberries look delicious. Are they as sweet as they appear?"

I nodded enthusiastically. "Oh, they're fantastic. The juiciest and sweetest strawberries you'll ever taste. Here, let me get you a sample."

And don't even get me started on the bunch of strawberries. Bunch? Really?

Adding bric a brac to the prompt help bring the two samples on a more even keel. But the AI version, while readable, has no author voice. It's bland and generic, somewhat flowery and uses too many unnecessary words. It's also unrealistic in the way the characters act. No nurse coming off a night shift would have the energy to wander a market all day. Nor would a stall holder leave their stall to do the same.

Each AI version of the scene had a version of:

We continued to chat, our conversation flowing effortlessly like an old friendship rekindled. He shared stories of his work as a nurse, the challenges and rewards he faced, while I regaled him with tales of the curious items I had collected over the years. Our dialogue danced between lighthearted banter and genuine moments of connection.

Curious, a completely different prompt was tried, this one a 1940's historical gay romance set in Wales. But yep, that passage more or less turned up again.

By now I'm guessing you know which is mine. But just in case you're unsure.

Sample 1 was AI

Sample 2 was Me

So that's my Two Pennies' Worth on AI complete with links for your perusal. I'll leave you with one more thought provoking article before I send you off to my colleagues. I asked an AI to write LGBTQ Fiction.

Check out my fellow RAtR authors who I'm sure will have strong opinions on this subject. I'm looking forward to reading their snippets.

As we drove over dunes, the bird in the back remained peaceful and silent, as though the hood or the hum of the car was enough to keep the poor thing calm and collected.

“What happened to her, anyway? The falcon, I mean.”

“Her wing was broken. Someone found her on the side of a mountain road and called me. She was in terrible shape when I took her in. She must have been clipped by something travelling pretty fast. I’ve had her for four months, but now she’s ready to return to her world. She just wants to fly. She just wants to be free.” He glanced at me and added, “Don’t we all?”

“Free? Yes. Fly? Not so much.”

“You don’t like flying?”

“No. It’s a long story.”

“I imagine flying must be an incredible experience. Taking off, soaring over the clouds, watching the earth pass by far below. I can picture it so clearly in my mind.”

“You’ve never flown before?”

Tariq shook his head. “I’ve never left Oman. My life is here. My work is here. My family is here.”

I felt my heart sink a little. So, Tariq had a family. Instantly I had a vision of him with his wife and children at home. Don’t get me wrong, I was happy for him. But I guess my gaydar got a little ahead of itself and got my hopes up in the process.

Not that I had come to Oman looking for company. Far from it.

I suppose I was just momentarily taken aback by those eyes.

Those dimples.

That embrace when he pulled me to my feet and held me steady.

I tried to concentrate on the conversation. “So where exactly are you taking her? The falcon, that is.”

“One of the rocky outcrops. Somewhere with shelter and shade in case she needs to rest her wing. But also a place with rodents and lizards and snakes. She needs to hunt.”

“There are snakes out here?”

“Don’t worry, they’re mostly harmless. Except for the saw-scaled viper. One bite from that snake is enough to kill two people.”

“Seriously?”

“Just stay out of their way and they’ll stay out of yours. Besides, you’ve already got one wound.”

At the mention of it, I touched my fingers to the sticky cut on my temple and winced.

“Don’t touch it,” he warned me. “You’ll get it infected. Let a doctor do the touching.”

“Okay, okay.”

“What are you doing out here anyway? Aside from causing traffic accidents.”

“I’m an arenologist.”

“A what?”

“An arenologist. I study sand, its paths, its patterns, its composition and layers… I’m the life of every dinner party.”

“I imagine you would be.”

“I was kidding.”

“I’m being serious. Sand is fascinating.”

“Thank you… I like to think so. Although you do live in the desert, so I think you’re kind of biased on the subject.”

“You may be right, but nobody can deny that the desert is a spiritual place.”

I raised one eyebrow. “Spiritual? I guess that’s where we differ.”

“How so?”

“When I see the desert, I’m looking at it from a scientific viewpoint.”

He laughed. “So, to you, sand is simply something to study?”

“Yes… and no. There’s actually nothing simple about it. Arenology is one of the few studies that spans several sciences. I’m not only working within the field of geology, but there are many crossovers with chemistry and biology as well. People don’t realise how important sand is to the balance of nature.”

Blurb

Cold cases, hot leads, a psychic psychopath, a copycat killer, cursed objects, the trial of the century—and wedding plans.

Psychic medium Simon Kincaide and sexy homicide detective Vic D'Amato met hunting a supernatural serial killer. Since then, Simon has become a police consultant on cases involving the paranormal, and Vic has gotten over his doubts about Simon's abilities being real. Along the way, they fell in love and got engaged. But it seems like the danger never ends.

Now, the first case Simon and Vic worked together comes back to haunt them as the killer goes to court and all hell breaks loose. The killer has a crazy fan setting curses on key players in the upcoming trial. Ghosts from an old cold case suggest that someone got away with murder. And a supernatural creature attracted to fear and death is using the Grand Strand as its feeding ground. Simon and Vic feel like they're waging a war on all fronts, but with the stakes so high, there can be No Surrender!

My Two Pennies' Worth

I'd read this book previously and I was eager to do a reread as audio. Kale Williams does an excellent job bringing the characters to life and adding a sense of jeopardy.

This book ties back in to the very first book of this series as the serial killer in book 1 stands trial. I personally think you would benefit from reading Badlands first.

On top of the trial, there's more ghosts, cursed objects, maybe a copycat killer or two. And a wedding to plan. Yes, Vic and Simon are going strong and I'm happy that this story didn't throw a wrench in their relationship or happiness.

There's some familiar faces and the return of Simon’s skeleton crew. Found family is very important in all Brice's books and no more so than here.

Can't wait for the wedding.  Sounds like all my favourite couples will be in attendance.

𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐑𝐁

When life drowns you in lemons, to hell with making lemonade. I wanted to burn the whole

world. But eighteen months from the day my life was torn apart, I’m tired of the anger. Tired of

the nightmares. Tired of putting one foot in front of the other just trying to survive. Three months

on a high country sheep station in the middle of nowhere is precisely the reboot I need. A chance

to break free. To breathe again. To find a way forward.

I put my entire life on hold and head south to Mackenzie Country. But falling for the captivating

young station boss was never part of the plan. Holden Miller might be smart and sexy and push

all my dusty buttons, but we come from two different worlds. I’m not looking for a relationship.

I’m not interested in love. I’m done with all that.

But Holden doesn’t care about my rules. Nestled safely in the arms of the spectacular Southern

Alps, on an isolated sheep farm at the top of the world, Holden begins knitting my battered heart together one careful stitch at a time. And with every pass of the thread, every braid of the river

on our doorstep, I catch a tantalising glimpse of something I’d almost given up on.

Happiness, and maybe even love.

If I have the courage to reach out and grab them.
