Rainbow Snippets - 11th/12th August

Rainbow Snippets is a Facebook Group that invites authors to post 6 sentences of their work each weekend. It can be from anything you like, your current WIP, a recent release, the golden oldie that even you had forgotten you had written, or just a scrap of an idea (as long as it has 6 coherent sentences). Nothing of your own work worth mentioning? How about a 6 sentence review of your favourite LGBTQ+ story.

I've had a bit of a snippet break--haha, months--but I'm back with another snippet from Under the Radar. Welcome to the start of Chapter 6.
#WIP #historical #WW2 #submarines

When Zach returned to take over for the afternoon watch, Albie had good news for him. The captain had, somewhat reluctantly, agreed to let the men topside for an hour before they dived late the next afternoon.

At eight o’clock the next morning Zach led ten members of his watch though the control room to the ladder at the base of the conning tower. Asking Chief Petty Officer Hillman to lead the way, he hung back, finally following his last man up the ladder. That the last man was Acting Leading Seaman Gethin Llewelyn was purely coincidental.

Even though the book isn't ready and I have no cover, I've created a Goodreads entry, because one way or another this book will be released this year, and this should spur me on (especially if people actually add the book to their 'want to read' shelf).

Add it to your Goodreads bookshelf here.

The Blurb

Having invited the wrong man into his bed, US Navy pilot Lieutenant Commander Zachary MacKenzie has only one option to save his family name and himself from possible jail time; agree to be cast out of both his country and his service. Sent to Blighty, to ‘help the war effort’, Zach’s punishment is more severe than simply being exiled. For a man used to the freedom of the skies, Zach’s banishment to a life beneath the waves ensures he will be unlikely to see the sky, let alone fly in it.

The only bright spot in the oppressive atmosphere of the submarine is sonar operator and steward, Gethin Llewelyn. Despite the differences of rank, background, and demeanour the pair form a fledgling friendship. However, the tenuous threads of their relationship are sorely tested by Zach’s inability to ignore the thin ribbon of desire that ties him to his steward and threatens to expose all his secrets. Combined with the confusion of Gethin’s late-blooming epiphany, the path to a mutual understanding might be impossible to navigate.

Throw in mysterious miniature vessels that appear to be stalking the sub, some strange vibrations, and several suspicious crew members. With the very real possibility that someone on board is a spy, Zach doesn’t know what is in more danger, the vessel under his charge or his heart.

Standing to straighten out his back, Zach pulled himself up to his full height and felt his hair brush the ceiling of the wardroom. Taking a step to the right, he positioned himself in the tallest, and one of the few parts of the submarine where he could stand with comfort. How the guys taller than his five ten coped he had no idea. Maybe he should ask Gethin next time he brought a drink.

Zach cupped the back of his neck with both hands and twisted his torso. He relished the burn in the muscles down his side. A low cough interrupted his lazy stretch, dragging his attention back to the table.

I'm running out of reworked chapters. This is the last one so I might head elsewhere next week. Welcome to the start of Chapter 3.

Gethin stood by his berth uncertain what to do next. They’d been at sea a little over eight hours and he’d just finished his first four-hour watch in the control room. Everything seemed to have gone well. He hadn’t missed anything important on the ASDIC and he’d been able to answer any requests for information that Lieutenant MacKenzie had made. It seemed strange to be reporting to an American officer, but the lieutenant seemed personable enough and was obviously still finding his feet in a submarine full of more experienced men, just as Gethin was. Which only made the Captain’s request return to the forefront of his mind.

I'll be running out of reworked chapters at this rate. Welcome to the start of Chapter 2. (Don't tell anyone but it's slightly more than 6 sentences)
#WIP #historical #WW2 #submarines

Dodging past the kissing couple at the gates, Zach tried to ignore the pang of jealousy that often flared within him at the sight of that simple show of affection. Knowing he could never have that with someone he cared passionately about, he pushed it away, burying it back under lust and the chase for sexual gratification. A chaste kiss, more so than many he had seen, Zach had to wonder if the departing sailor had yet to deflower his flame-haired beauty. It could have been the fiery colour of her long wavy hair, in the style of Veronica Lake, but the girl seemed less demure than the kiss would give her credit for.

Within moments of flashing his credentials to the guard on duty hurrying footsteps echoed behind him.

“Morning.” Slightly breathless in his attempt to catch up with Zach, the young man who had been saying goodbye to his girlfriend sidled in beside him and tried to match Zach stride for stride. “Lieutenant Timothy Noble. Everyone calls me Ginger.”

Have a couple of lines from my WIP.
More World War Two submarines anyone?

A strong wind blew in from the south, slamming waves into the harbour wall and sending jets of water spraying into the air. The fine mist dampened Zach’s skin as he continued staring out to sea. He’d barely moved in the last half hour and to any onlookers it would appear as if he carried out a lonely vigil. Not that there was anyone to see, not on a chilly evening such as this. The Brits he’d come across so far were a hardy breed, but even they would be curled up in front of the fire by now with a warming mug of tea.
The wind changed direction unexpectedly, whipping Zach’s blond hair back across his forehead.

A couple of lines from my WIP seems appropriate. You'll probably be reading a lot of this in the coming weeks. World War Two submarines anyone?

“I know it has been over a decade since you’ve needed me in an official capacity, but I like to think your father named me as your legal guardian for a reason, Zachary.” Charles scrubbed a hand over his short hair, the act ruffling strands that would normally be darkened to the colour of autumn leaves by Brylcreem. Grey hair, which previously had simply peppered his temples, showed in abundance amongst the auburn. Clearly visible now Zach chose to look, and serving as a reminder of nearly two decades age difference between them. Right now, slumped behind his desk, Charles looked every one of those nineteen years. All because of Zach’s actions.

Since Calamine & Christmas Cake, has just been transferred to Kindle Unlimited I think I'll post a segment from that.

“Jesus Fucking Christ! What the fuck have you done to yourself?”
The shrill words tugged me from a troubled sleep, reverberating around my head despite the fact that my skull seemed to be stuffed with cotton wool.
Had I drunk that much last night? I felt as groggy as hell. I searched through clouded memories, but I could only recall a bottle of Peroni, left mostly untouched beside a half-eaten dinner.
“Glenn, I’m talking to you.”

Rainbow Snippet makes a welcome return for the end of the year

I'm hoping to stay on top of these in the coming year, but I'm going to end the year as I hope to start the next.

I'm going to kick off these final snippets of the year with a few lines from my new Christmas novella, Calamine & Christmas Cake.

As an irritant, a measles rash turned out to be far more potent than a philandering non-boyfriend. The prickliness of hot itchy skin drove me out of the bed and into the bathroom about ten minutes after the call with Xander. I didn’t have time for self-pity after that, not when trying to calamine my arse and the backs of my legs had involved twisting like a pretzel. It’d taken all of my concentration to stay upright. Then I’d laughed myself silly at the sight of my dick covered in pink splotches and by the time I’d wiped the tears from my eyes my frustration and self-loathing had ebbed away. Hard to stay pissed when the reflection in the bathroom mirror looked like Mr Blobby.

Since Christmas is nearly upon us I think it's only fair to subject you to words from my one and only Christmas story. Grab a mince pie and settle in for another few lines from When Love Flue In. This time I'll let Reagan's mum deliver some of her pearls of wisdom. They seemed appropriate.

“The middle of the night and holidays are always the worst times to be lonely,” she said, her soft tone belying the powerful truth behind the words. “Everyone expecting you to be happy, when you’re feeling anything but.”
There was no one making any such expectations of Dominic. No one at all.
Reagan sighed heavily. Dominic wasn’t his problem. Dominic had said as much himself.

The arse in question wiggled enticingly, forcing Dominic to shift uncomfortably in the soft leather of his chair. He knew that the movement meant nothing. It was neither encouragement nor even flirtation. Reagan was obviously just jiggling his pole. And didn’t that statement bring all sorts of other images to mind that would do Dominic no good whatsoever in his current predicament.
Dominic should just leave the room and let the chimney sweep get on with his job without being subjected to his lustful gaze.

Another snippet from Village Love #2. For anyone that loved Resistance, this is Smudge's story. A snippet from Chapter 3.  (Unbetaed. Beware! Also I have no idea if this is 6 sentences. I kept losing count.)

“He’s very good with the children, isn’t he?” A female voice had Smudge near jumping out of his skin. He tore his gaze from Raleigh to find the woman that had been sent to the drinks table standing beside him with a paper cup. “A much better librarian all round than the last one. Always accommodating, makes time for everyone, easy on the eye, if you like that geeky, supply teacher look, and great with kids.” She sighed. “He’d make a perfect husband. Shame he’s gay.”

While he waited for Mal to appear, Smudge rummaged in the fridge, certain that he still had a can of liquid inspiration in there somewhere. He straightened, triumphant, the slim can held aloft.

“Those energy drinks are really bad for you, you know.”

“Don’t you start.” Smudge popped the lid, in part just to be pedantic, and took a longer than normal pull from the can. “I get enough dire warnings from Adam. Anyway I thought you were a radiographer, Doctor Malik.”

Another snippet from Village Love #2. For anyone that loved Resistance, this is Smudge's story. Still in Chapter 1.  (Unbetaed, so excuse the overly-long sentences. Means you get more words for your snippet anyway!)

The old bus could barely manage forty on a good day but, despite his panic, Raleigh wouldn’t dream of going that fast in the centre of the village. However, even with the needle wavering around the twenty mile an hour marker on the vintage speedometer, Smudge’s lithe form and bright hair soon became nothing but a fixed point in his mirror.
For one heart-thumping moment Raleigh thought Smudge intended to chase after the mobile library. Sweat broke out at his hairline and his hands tightened on the steering wheel. But the moment passed, Smudge shouted something about fines that Raleigh couldn’t quite make out over the noise of the diesel engine, and then his shoulders slumped and he turned to talk to old Mrs Danridge.
Crisis averted, Raleigh let out a long steadying breath and slowed the bus even further to take the humped bridge over the stream, sounding his horn as he went.

It's been a while since I posted a rainbow snippet. That's not to say I haven't had anything ready
for you guys to read. I have. But life has thrown me a curve ball that put me off my stride for a while. Anyway, enough moping, let's get on with the snippet.

This snippet is from Village Love #2. For anyone that loved Resistance, this is Smudge's story. Let's start at the beginning.  (Unbetaed, so excuse the overly-long sentences.)

“No, no, no! Don’t you dare. Not again.” Smudge tightened his grip on the books in his hand and hastened his pace.

Surely, he wouldn’t? But Smudge knew the exact moment Raleigh had clocked him. Only the fact that Mrs Danridge, one of the frailer members of the Slopy Bottom community, was poised on the pull-down steps of the mobile library gave Smudge any hope that he would make it to the village green car park where the bus resided for several hours every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

With the length of the main road of Slopy Bottom stretching before him like a scene out of Alice in Wonderland or the Wizard of Oz, Smudge broke into a jog.

Well, looks like this will be the last snippet from Resistance. Release date is almost upon us. Available now for pre-order at Amazon, Resistance will be on sale at Amazon and to borrow on Kindle Unlimited from 5th July. Universal Amazon link: myBook.to/Resistance_LF

Let's catch up with the boys at the beginning of Chapter Six. Well, just Mal in this snippet, and his colleague and best friend.

“Are you sure that’s wise?” Georgie cradled her mug and let the steam shroud her face. Her normally tidy ponytail seemed skewed, and several strands of blonde hair had escaped their bindings and hung around her face, dangling precariously close to her coffee.

Mal shrugged and glanced down into the murky, brown depths of his own cup of instant. Small clumps of powdered creamer clung to the walls of the mug. He grimaced at the reminder that someone had used the last of the milk and not bothered to replace it. What he’d give for a frothy cappuccino from the coffee shop in the village right about now.

Things are moving along nicely with the production of Resistance. A Cover Reveal is planned for later in the month with a release date set for the 5th July. In the meantime you can add Resistance to your Goodreads page.

Let's catch up with the boys at the beginning of Chapter Five.

“There’s flour everywhere.” Rick laughed as he glanced around his kitchen.
Mal nodded towards a pile of fabric just beyond the doorway. “At least our clothes are clean.”
“That was an inspired move, getting me naked to make chapattis.”
“Well, look how messy you are.” Mal rubbed his hand through Rick’s chest hair and a fine white cloud puffed into the space between them.

No Rainbow Snippet last week because I was at ComicCon.

Edits are finally finished on Resistance and I'm in the process of formatting the manuscript so I have some ARCs available for reviewers when the cover reveal takes place.
I thought we'd have another clip of Rick and Mal. Since we've already had a clip from Chapter Three in an earlier snippet, here's a few lines from the beginning of Chapter Four.

It was amazing how quickly he’d become used to Mal’s presence in his life, in his home, even if it was only at the weekends. Seven weeks since Mal’s first ever visit and Rick found it hard to imagine his cottage without Mal in it: the scents and sounds of somebody cooking for him, Mal’s clothes in the laundry basket, waking up on a Sunday morning with long legs twined in his own and safe arms wrapped around him. Last weekend, he’d given Mal his own key. No fanfare or grand gesture. He’d simply pressed the spare key to the cottage into Mal’s hand and told him to let himself in, any time. He might have laid too much stress on those last two words.

With the first round of edits finished on Resistance I thought we'd have another clip of Rick and Mal. Here's the start of Chapter Two. Whatever had Rick worried, they seemed to be over it.

“Here?” Mal choked out.
Rick pushed his body up against the wall and spread his arms. He felt the pull on his waistband give a little and the pinch in his balls lessened just enough to be enjoyable rather than painful.
“Here.” Mal repeated, in a tone that implied it had been his intention all along. The warmth returned to Rick’s back and Mal’s voice came from right behind Rick’s ear this time, all hesitancy gone. “On the stairs.”

I've finally remembered to post a Rainbow Snippet. Seemed appropriate to pick the opening lines of Resistance since it has just been sent off to the editor's for spit 'n' polish. All, some of none of these words may make the final cut. So grab 'em while they're still around.

Resistance is the follow up story to Resonance. Six weeks later...

A smile can always be heard in your voice.
He could almost hear his mum uttering those words of wisdom—just nine of many in her repertoire—and for a moment Rick wished his parents still lived in the village. That he didn’t need to travel halfway around the world for a hug from his mum.
Not that she’d entertain his chiping for more than a moment before he got a bannicking. She’d always listened to his complaints, would offer advice where necessary, but stupidity would be followed by a whack upside his head or being chased off with the yard brush. He smiled at the memories the thought conjured up. No, his mum would provide no help in this situation.

What to do this week? How about a snippet from my latest release 'New Lease of Life'? A contemporary romance set in London, it is available here from Dreamspinner Press. And if you time it right you could still get 25% in store.

“Uh-huh.” One of Colby’s large fingers hooked under Pip’s chin, bringing their faces level. “That’s better. Pip, you’re not damaged goods and you never have been, not to me. You’re a flawed hero. No, you’re my flawed hero, and I would be honored to be your sidekick. If you’ll have me?”

Divine Magazine said "I absolutely loved New Lease of Life. It's a feel good story that will touch your heart and keep you riveted to the very end."
