Luke Sinclair has spent years rebuilding a life he nearly didn’t survive. A respected dermatologist, he keeps his world carefully controlled: part-time hours, familiar routines, and emotional guardrails strong enough to keep the past where it belongs. He knows exactly how fragile peace can be. What he doesn’t know is what to do with the sharp pull he feels toward men—especially men like Neil Sainsbury.

Neil owns the coolest bar in town: loud music, beautiful strangers, and absolutely no room for vulnerability. Charming, reckless, and notoriously hard to pin down, Neil has built his entire life on confidence and control. But behind the lights and flirtation, he’s harbouring a devastating secret, and if anyone finds out, he’s terrified he’ll lose everything he’s worked for.

When Neil trips off the stage during a live event and a doctor is called from the crowd, Luke accidentally discovers the truth Neil is desperate to hide.
What begins as reluctant support turns into late-night conversations, unexpected trust, and a friendship neither man saw coming. Luke understands too well what it means to live inside fear. Neil understands exactly how dangerous it is to let someone close enough to see the truth.
But falling in love means risking exposure, and both men have spent years hiding the parts of themselves they fear make them impossible to love.

Set against the glow of London nightlife, this is a contemporary MM romance about survival, vulnerability, and learning that being seen might be the bravest thing of all.

EXCERPT:

“This forced inactivity has been good for me,” Neil says as I prepare our fifth breakfast together. I half-wondered if he’d go back to his place yesterday, but he said he was happy loafing around at mine if that was okay with me.
More than. Coming through the door from a day at work to find him sprawled out on my sofa is actually rather wonderful.
“Not that inactive,” I point out. Now I’ve discovered the taste of his dick, I can’t get enough. Going to bed with Neil, waking up with Neil, sharing the sofa, the shower, the kitchen, and my little back yard with Neil, is a conversation I never want to finish. Sex with him is comfort and heat, tangled together with a desire that’s deep, steady, and impossible to exhaust. My heart still feels stunned every time I think about him. That I don’t know what I’m doing half the time doesn’t matter. I’m a fast learner and trust him implicitly.
“I’ve been using the time you’ve not been here pestering me for sex to do a lot of thinking,” he continues.
No shit. He sits at my small table, watching me potter around. “Yeah[…]”

RELEASE TOUR: All's Fair in Love and Pizza by Lane Hayes

RELEASE TOUR: All's Fair in Love and Pizza by Lane Hayes

Length: 44k
Series: n/a
Genre: Contemporary, Rom-Com, Small-Town, Sports
Tropes: Grumpy-sunshine, Enemies to lovers, Humor
Trigger/Content Warnings: n/a
Designer: Reese Dante

A bake-off between enemies…what could go wrong?

Mateo

Can you believe this? Haverton’s football hero is opening a bagel shop next to my pizzeria and he’s selling—wait for it—pizza bagels. The nerve!

And Rob Vilmer isn’t above using his fame to attract clients. It’s annoying and yes, I’m feeling a little crusty about the situation. My temper has gotten me into a few binds, but a pizza-bagel war? This is a first.

I’m gonna crush him.

Rob

After years of playing in the pros, I’m beat. All I want is to open a bagel shop in the town that gave me a shot at the big time. I’d love some peace and quiet too, however, I won’t be getting that with Mateo Cavaretti next door.

Geez, I can’t believe I had a crush on that guy in college. Sure, he’s still incredibly good-looking, but he’s a grouch. And while I like my business partner’s idea of settling our dispute with a classic bake-off, Mateo and I can’t be in the same room without fireworks exploding.

Okay, some of those fireworks are extra sexy and that might be a problem.

Or is all truly fair in love and pizza…and bagels?

All’s Fair in Love and Pizza is an MM grumpy/sunshine, small-town romance featuring former teammates, a culinary challenge, and a HEA worth fighting for.

*A portion of All's Fair in Love and Pizza was originally included in the Delicious Anthology. This new version has doubled in length to over 40k words and a whole lot of bake-off shenanigans!

EXCERPT:

“Whoa. Wait up.” I held my hand like a stop sign and stepped into his space. Bad move. I had to tilt my head to meet his eyes now, and that was weird. I was six one—not exactly a small dude, but that asshole had sprouted at least another two inches since college. I’d bet he was six foot six. And yes, he was an asshole. I hadn’t thought so until a minute ago, but now… “You can’t sell pizza bagels next to a pizza parlor.”

“I can’t?”

“No, you can’t. It’s brand assimilation or something. It’s illegal.”

“Illegal?” he scoffed. “I don’t think so, Mateo. Bagels are bagels, pizza is pizza. But I was only kid—”

“Yeah, but a pizza bagel is a piece of dough that’s dressed up to look like something it isn’t. It’s shady advertising, not to mention blatant customer poaching. Sell all the bagels you want, but don’t sell pizza bagels. That’s a great way to get off to a rotten start. You know what I’m saying?”

Rob regarded me for a long moment. “Are you threatening me?”

“Threaten is a strong word. I’m suggesting you do the right thing.”

“Or what?”

I snort-laughed in my most derisive, supremely irritating fashion. It was the kind of insincere and dismissive gesture that had pissed off opponents on the field years ago and still probably got under my cousins’ skin. Nothing to brag about, but hey…I’d learned how to play with the big kids early. Rule number one: Never show fear. Rule number two: Never back down or give someone else the upper hand.

“I ’spose you’ll find out.” I turned on my heels, tray clenched to my chest as I sauntered next door.

Yeah, yeah. Look, maybe Rob wasn’t the enemy. Maybe it was a quirky act of fate that he’d happened to lease the property next to mine. The one I wanted.

Fortune had shined upon him and that was nice and all, but Boardwalk Pizza was an institution in this town. We were the experts, we were the ones with decades of experience, and we weren’t going anywhere.

So Rob could shove his goddamn pizza bagel up his ass.

RELEASE TOUR: The Lost Lovelies by Vanora Lawless

RELEASE TOUR: The Lost Lovelies by Vanora Lawless

Length: 81k words
Series: standalone
Prior Reading: n/a
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Romantasy, Historical Fantasy
Tropes: 1945 + Magic, Second Chance Romance, Forced Proximity, Missing Person, Blood Magic, Queer Found Family, Mystery
Trigger/Content Warnings: Graphic violence, on page sex, mentions of child death and murder, reference to sexual assault of minors, on page non-graphic death of a child in the past (not murder), drowning, alcohol use (both social and overindulging)

Famed war correspondent Kit Lovely left Nova Scotia seventeen years ago under the crushing weight of a broken heart, swearing never to return. But after he receives an ominous letter from his new sister-in-law, Kit rushes back across the Atlantic, where he discovers their ransacked house tingling from mysterious magic. With his brother and sister-in-law gone without a trace, Kit’s left reeling. His own faulty magic can’t work a tracking spell, nor are the police much use. Desperate for answers, Kit has no choice but to turn to the very man who once shattered him.

Reserved mage Gus North is an expert PI specializing in missing persons cases. He’s also guarding a dangerous secret: he hails from a long line of talented blood magic users. When the only man he’s ever loved begs for help to find his little brother, Gus can’t turn him away. Not even with all the lies, and hurt, and lingering feelings between them clawing him up.

As they chip away at the case, their core beliefs about themselves, each other, and the world they live in unravel, exposing a deadlier enemy than either of them could have imagined.

After all, in a world of magic, not all monsters in fairytales are just stories.

THE LOST LOVELIES is an intensely emotional second-chance romance full of queer found family, mystery, and magic. Set in 1945 Halifax, Nova Scotia.

EXCERPT:

What was I supposed to do? What could I do? I was a journalist—a correspondent—who relied on developing contacts and sources in the area I reported from. I’d never done that in Halifax; I hadn’t set foot here in over ten years. I didn’t have the time to form an information network.

Waiting patiently for the results of a lackluster investigation was intolerable. My brother and sister-in-law were missing. Who really cared other than me? Did he have any friends who would have reported him missing if I hadn’t come home? Did Mary-Alice?

Ted had always been timid, but good-natured and kind enough that people were drawn to him anyway. Someone had to know something, surely?

I wasn’t equipped for this. I didn’t know who to turn to. I didn’t—

A restraining hand on my shoulder stopped me and pulled me around.

Gus.

“Kit, stop. Where do you think you’re going?”

Gus was a gumshoe and a talented mage. Tillie had proudly written about his triumphs in her letters. He tracked down missing people all the time. He’d learned his trade from Russell Flanigan, who made the papers regularly.

And… oh hell.

Everything in me recoiled at the idea forming in my mind. “I…”

I needed to hire August North.

His emotionless dark eyes remained locked on mine as he waited for me to continue. How was I going to ask him? Would he agree? Or would he disappoint me again?

That wasn’t fair. Regardless of what happened between us, Gus helped people when they needed him, and he always tried to do the right thing. I might not be able to trust him with my heart, but I could trust him to help me find Ted.

“You had a hell of a shock,” he said, when I still didn’t speak. “You can’t just wander off. Someone should look after you.” My unintelligent, painfully contrarian heart hitched. “You know Mum’s waiting in the wings to swoop in and do it.”

And then sank like a lead weight. Shaking my head, I shrugged out of his grip. “I’m a grown man, August. I can take care of myself. I’ve been doing it most of my life.”

“This is different.”

“Is it?” I discarded the rest of the angry response I wanted to give. Losing my temper wasn’t going to get him to work for me. “Maybe you’re right. I do need help.”

Relief relaxed his shoulders. “Okay, let’s get you back to—”

Rolling my eyes, I crossed my arms and huffed, “Not like that. I need your help, Gus. I want to hire you.”

His head cocked, and the mist clinging to his skin caught in the sun as it poked through the clouds. “Uh. What?”

“You are still a PI, aren’t you? And you locate missing people. Well, Ted and Mary-Alice are missing. I need someone to find them.”

“The Mounties—”

“Are more interested in assuming Ted’s guilty of a crime than that he’s a victim of one. I heard what Constable Corbin said. Do you really think they’ll put any resources into this when they’ve got their hands full with the powder keg of civilians and servicemen in tight quarters here? Because I don’t, and I can’t—Gus, I can’t lose Ted. Not if there’s any hope. Think about how you’d feel if it was—” I broke off in horror, too late for my rushed words not to land like knives.

His gaze went darker, hurt seeping into his eyes. He didn’t lash out, but it hit me in the gut as strongly as if he had. We both stood silent. My tongue was too thick in my mouth, the need to apologize clawing at me.

“Okay, Kit,” he said with hollow resignation. “You want to hire me? Fine. I'll take the case. But I can’t make any promises.”

RELEASE TOUR: Goblin Heart by Fae Loxley

RELEASE TOUR: Goblin Heart by Fae Loxley

Length: 77k words
Series: standalone
Prior Reading: n/a
Genre: fantasy romance
Tropes: Heist, Royalty, Tragic Hero, Rescue, Trans Hero
Trigger/Content Warnings: Claustrophobia, past and present abuse, slight body horror, magical mind manipulation, strong disassociation, violence, death of peripheral characters, insects, misogynistic/transphobic villains, oral sex, and penetrative vaginal sex.
Designer: brosedesignz-bookcovers.com

http://books2read.com/GoblinHeart

As a goblin prince living in the human court of Morvane, Luc is unerringly loyal to his best friend, Prince Ramon. While his feelings seem genuine, his loyalty is forced, magically-controlled by the false heart beating in his chest. The royal wizards have hidden his true heart out of reach, keeping Luc as a well-mannered captive in the Morvanish palace.

Will Fletcher is an irritable apprentice smith, more comfortable sneaking off to the goblin kingdom of the Brightwood than staying in his family home. When Luc stumbles into his life, Will learns that he and the goblin prince have more in common than he expects. In order to steal back Luc’s heart and free him from magical bondage, Will must confront the shadows hiding in his past and forge a new life.

EXCERPT:

“I never wanted to be a wizard,” Will said. The words burst out of him in a rush, harsh and rough-edged. “But if I am one, I want to use my magic to do something good. I want to be more than… than this.” He gestured to the study, the bed, the detritus that had once been the sphere. “I want to use magic the way they do in the Brightwood.”

Luc knelt on the floor in front of him. “How do you know what magic they use in the Brightwood?”

“I’ve been there.” Will tried to look away, afraid that Luc might resent him for it, but Luc held his face in a firm grip. “My magic helps me get through the thorns. There’s a smith there, Olven, he showed me some of the magic the goblins have done. It’s small, but it’s helpful. It doesn’t have to hurt people.”

“You can navigate the thorns,” Luc said. “You’ve been to the Brightwood.” He smiled, but it wasn’t the vacant, unsettling grin that came with his magicked heart. His eyes were shining, sharp teeth bared. “What a curious man you are, William Fletcher.”

Luc slid his fingers through Will’s hair, cupping the back of his head. The heat of him felt like magic, warm and full, a surge of dizzying elation rising through Will’s body. It filled him like steam, and he raised a hand to Luc’s thigh.

Will had some experience with men. Traveling farmhands passing through Westwood were more than willing to spend time with a young man who wouldn’t spread tales. They didn’t bother with gentle touches and sidelong glances. There wasn’t enough time for that. Will was used to fellows making their intentions known, not having to guess what they meant when they stroked his hair and called him curious.

A voice rose from the other side of the house, and Luc pulled away, leaving Will kneeling in the center of the study with shafts of light pooling over the floor.

“We should hurry,” Luc said. Will felt adrift, yearning for something he hadn’t known he could ask for. He swiped a hand over his mouth. The pressure lingered, the ghost of warm lips that hadn’t quite touched him. “We don’t have much time before they return.”

When all your friends have plus-ones but you’re still figuring out step one.

From the 2025 winner of the Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ Romance comes a tale of two housemates in love. If only they realised.

Alaric: Turning thirty doesn’t mean you have to grow up and be boring, right? Except if you ask all my friends, it does. They’re all busy coupling up and settling down, while I’m stuck cuddling up to strangers for a shot at a good night’s sleep. Only this state of utter desperation would lead me to move to middle-of-nowhere Sutton Common with the world’s most peculiar, boring man. He even walks an imaginary dog!

Gerald:  I never thought I would want a housemate, and after meeting Alaric, I’m even more convinced. The man’s a walking disaster who sleeps on the floor and won’t stop making fun of my book club reads. I could never trust him with my secrets, like my dream to dance with my neighbour’s dog at the prestigious Crufts dog show. I should be glad when he decides to move back out as soon as possible, right?

Only it turns out Alaric might appreciate a firm hand… and I might like being the one holding the leash.

This is book 2 in the Mis-Shapes series but works perfectly as a stand alone.

EXCERPT:

Like a burst tube of glitter, Dr Alaric Alvin explodes into my flat. One second I’m wiping my sweaty right palm down my chinos in preparation for offering it out, and then, bam, there he is—chattering, laughing, plopping his bags down with an exaggerated groan, shaking out his achy fingers, and twirling around. Absorbing the flat. Absorbing my bookshelves. Absorbing me. Already, I’m planning an escape route.

“Hi! Gerald? Gerald Mason? Hi! Hi! I’m Alaric. Or Al, if you prefer. I answer to most things.” He launches into small talk. “Isaac and Luke have told me so much about you, Gerald! You like to be called Gerald? You don’t shorten it to anything? Hey, this flat’s cool. Love this oak flooring. Your email definitely played that down. What finish do you use on the wood to get that shine? Love these sofa cushions, too! So cute! And the books. So many! Is that one over there a history of anime? Nietzsche too! Cool! OMG, you won’t believe the nightmare I had on the train lugging these two suitcases. My fault for having so many bloody clothes. Oh, and isn’t that photo gorgeous? I love, love, love black-and-white family photos! Is it you and your parents? Hey, your mum’s so pretty! And your dad’s so tall! I can see where you get your height from. Is that Italy? With the mountains in the background? Looks like Italy. Oh my god, have you ever climbed Vesuvius? It’s amazing.”

My head is shattering. He’s asking me a question. Several, in fact. Which generally means responses are required. I make eye contact—briefly—whilst my whiplashed brain flips through a list of socially acceptable replies. Alaric’s eyes are blue. And big. He’s shorter than me by at least six inches and thin, so why does it feel like he’s taking up the entire room? My body curls in on itself, even my toes scrunch up in my socks and sliders, pleading with my brain not to make me do this. Stand here, coming up with suitable chit-chat, having to explain the photo.

Alaric’s mouth stops moving. The room falls silent.

“Yeah, it is,” I say. “Italy. My mum and dad. Four years ago. Vesuvius is great.”

I chance another look at him. Blond hair with dark highlights, messy, a small nose, freckles scattered over it. Elf I think, over and over. Elf. Isaac’s brought me a living, breathing, talking elf. And this elf beams at me like I’ve just told him there is an entire secret colony of his kind living under a rock in the backyard. The gap between his front teeth is the Grand Canyon of ready smiles and responsible for the lisping manner in which he said suitcases and sofa. The rest of him is way too much to contemplate all at once, such as the smell he’s carried with him into the flat: the bright mineral scent of petrichor mixed with lemony aftershave. He’s like freshly cut grass.

The cowboy, the rancher, and a little holiday magic...

Tanner

I met the grumpiest man on the planet and I’m head over heels in lust. No joke. Oak Ridge Ranch’s new part-time vet slash ranch hand is a bear and he’s built like one too. If I were smart, I’d keep my distance.

In a twist, I’m not so smart.

But I can tell that under his hard as nails exterior, the cowboy is a gentle giant. Axel is a devoted single dad, a dedicated vet, and…I think he likes me. Or he wants me.

I can work with that.

There’s nothing wrong with a little holiday fun, is there?

Axel

I need the job at the ranch through December, then I’m out of here. I have a kid to think of and it’s time to settle old scores and build a new life.

But Tanner is making things complicated. He’s smart, intuitive, and charming, and—

Whoa! I’ve learned my lesson. This is temporary. I’m not Tanner’s cowboy.

I might be attracted to him, but I can handle it.

I hope.

Okay, fine. I may need some Christmas magic to get out of this with my heart in one piece. Wish me luck.

A Cowboy Holiday is an MM, bisexual romance featuring a single dad-cowboy-grump, a sweetheart of a rancher, and some holiday magic.

A moment later, a beast of a man appeared out of nowhere.

A beast.

No kidding. Axel was…huge.

Enormous.

He was a good three inches taller than my six foot two, and he was built like a refrigerator—broad shoulders, a thick torso, and thighs like ham hocks. He wasn’t heavy, necessarily, but there was a lot of him. His cowboy hat hid part of his face, however, I could tell he had brown hair, a neat beard, a strong nose, and a faded scar on the left side of his cheek.

Axel the vet wasn’t a handsome man, but I left a margin for error since I couldn’t see his eyes. Hot or not, there was something compelling about him. He wasn’t someone who could be easily ignored. He filled a damn barnyard with his intimidating size and obvious strength. I couldn’t imagine being in a small room with him.

My studying glance was quick but thorough. He wore a protective apron over a blue plaid shirt, dark jeans, muddy work boots, and a battered cowboy hat. Yeah, I had to admit that Dennis’s description fit. Axel could have been a lumberjack, a contractor, or…a cowboy.

I sensed Axel was checking me out too, probably wondering if I had a problem taking a hint. He wanted me gone, ASAP. He had shit to do and no time for pleasantries with nosy visitors.

There was only one way to deal with this type of customer: kill ’em with kindness, and sprinkle in some Spade charm.

“I’m Tanner Spade. I hear you’re new in town. Welcome.” My megawatt smile didn’t garner even a hint of a response, but I barreled on, undeterred. “I was just talking to Dennis about purchasing his herd.” Not a twitch. “Beautiful animals. We had Jerseys for a while, but I’ve always been partial to the Holstein breed. We’ve got a few dozen at Oak Ridge now, and I’m lookin’ forward to adding to our bunch.” Nothing. “Dennis says you’ve been caring for them?”

“Hmph.”

His grunt felt like progress…and a challenge to see what else I could get out of him. However, winning over a grumpy vet wasn’t my priority. I didn’t have time to linger here. They needed me at the ranch.

“They seem to be in good shape and Dennis agrees, but I’m gonna need a bill of health for each animal, including vaccinations, deworming history, diseases, or concerns with disposition or injuries. You know…the basics.”

More staring.

Dennis pulled his hat off and scratched his balding head. “Axel, can you get that paper work to Tanner by tomorrow?”

“I can do that.” Axel’s deep timbre echoed in the yard.

I should have walked away. I’d obviously caught Axel while he was in the middle of something, and he didn’t give “ray of sunshine” vibes. But I’d never been good at leaving well enough alone.

The hockey player, the figure skater, and the roommate situation…

Gus

No one throws a party quite like I do. Technically, I could have graduated three years ago, but I love Smithton, I love hockey, and the team needs a good captain with a positive outlook. That’s me. I love this town, and it loves me.

Well, except for my roommate.

Rafe doesn’t like me at all—total mystery. I’m a nice guy. Ask anyone. He’s the one with stick-in-the-mud-itis. Or maybe the nonstop partying is too much for him. It’s definitely taking a toll on me, and I’m trying to do better ’cause in a twist, Rafe’s not so bad.

He has a great smile, pretty eyes, cute dimples, and—

Oh, man. I think I have a situation.

Rafe

This cannot be happening. I’m a competitive figure skater with goals and big plans. How did I get saddled with a party-boy hockey-hero for a roommate?

Oh, yeah. I mistakenly assumed the captain of the hockey team would be goal-oriented. Wrong. Gus and I have nothing in common, and I have no idea how I’m going to survive a year of this.

But oddly enough, we’re good together in a crisis. So good, I’m beginning to wonder if we could be something serious. Something more than a couple of athletes playing the roommate game.

The Roommate Game is an MM light-angst, college hockey romance featuring a fun-loving captain, a serious figure skater, and a chance at forever.

EXCERPT:

This hangover wasn’t my worst by a long shot. I still felt crappy, though, and my mouth was dry as dust. I hobbled to the kitchen and sent up a prayer to the fridge gods that there’d be something on the shelves.

The gods answered with a gallon of pulp-free orange juice and a single slice of cheddar cheese.

Meh, but beggars couldn’t be choosers.

I glugged half the carton, swiped my hand across my mouth, and was about to polish off the rest when I sensed someone behind me.

Rafe, my cute, but very grumpy roommate. The dude was about as friendly as a porcupine who’d lost a fight with a cactus. Seriously.

“Want some?” I held out the container, positive I could win him over with a friendly smile.

Wrong.

“No, I don’t want to share germs with you, but thank you for asking,” he replied, a thunderous expression on his pinched face. “What I would appreciate is for you to replace my orange juice and maybe add a sticker to remind yourself not to touch it next time.”

“Oh, shit. This is yours?”

“It was,” he corrected.

“I’m sorry, man. I’ll make it up to you. Let me buy you breakfast.”

“No, thanks. I have class.”

Now, that could have been taken one of two ways: A, I have class and would never drink out of a carton in my boxer briefs and a holey T-shirt while smelling like the south end of a northbound mule. Or B, I have a Biology lecture to attend.

Yeah, I was getting A vibes, too.

Rafe spun on his heels, marched out of the room, and stomped up the stairs. And unless I was way off the mark, he’d closed his bedroom door with more force than usual. Yep…he was pissed.

Again.

I hoped it was my imagination, but I could have sworn I’d caught a hint of true animosity in his glare this time. The sort of steely-eyed venom I associated with opponents doing battle on the ice in the middle of a heated game. Not my fucking roommate.

Shit.

Did Rafe hate me?

With his CEO father away, Benjamin Whitaker III is left running the family empire. And, you know, trying not to implode from anxiety while he’s at it.

Local investigative reporter Jackson James smells something fishy going on at Whitaker Seafood, and it’s definitely not just the mackerel.

One’s trying to keep things clean and tidy. The other’s digging up some serious dirt.

This year, Silver Shoals isn’t dreaming of a white Christmas. Just a low stress week, a front page headline, and a way out of this very merry fish-mess.

Baby, It’s Cod Outside is a low heat, opposites attract, hurt/comfort, small town MM holiday romance. It can be read as a standalone.

EXCERPT:

Ben’s parked outside the used bookstore downtown, motor idling, the radioactive binder sitting in his lap. Snowflakes drift lazily by the windshield. The scene is pretty and painfully indifferent. He checks his watch again: 10:43 pm, still seventeen minutes early. Because of course he is. Panic loves punctuality.

He stares down his reflection in the mirror, telling himself that this is a person about to take back control.

The reflection does not look convinced.

Here, Ben’s anxiety helpfully starwipes to another slide in the ongoing horror-powerpoint entitled ‘Absolute Worst Outcomes of this Meeting’ that’s cycling in his brain: Jackson simply laughs at him and tells him to stop wasting his time.

He’s mid-fantasy about reversing down the block when knuckles rap suddenly against his driver’s side window. Ben flinches hard enough to head-butt the visor.

Window down, cold air in, along with Jackson James: snow-flecked hair, eyes crinkling above a scarf wrapped high against the chill. “Evening. Are you planning on loitering out here all night, or just until someone calls the neighborhood watch?”

“I didn’t realize you were already here. Thanks again for meeting me, Mr. James. And, uh, sorry about the dating app thing. It was kind of a desperation move.”

“‘Desperation move,’ huh?” Jackson repeats with obvious delight. Ben silently blesses the scarf for obscuring Jackson’s too handsome face, even as another, less helpful part of him regrets missing out on seeing that smile in full. “Exactly how every guy dreams of being described.”

Ben’s laugh cracks like ice. “I didn’t mean it like that. Obviously. I just didn’t really have a lot of options. Not that you’re a last resort. I just meant you’re...special.” He closes his eyes, briefly debating jumping out and running directly into the ocean. “Specialized! I mean specialized. Your skillset.” His brain is begging his mouth to stop to little avail.

A faint snort escapes Jackson. “Keep digging, Fish Prince. At this rate, we’ll hit bedrock in no time.”

“I’m sorry. It’s been... a lot today. I just meant you’re unattached. Er, professionally unattached. To Whitaker Seafood.” He forces himself to slow down. “You’re not connected to any of this and it seemed like yesterday… that you thought something was wrong. And it is. Something is very wrong. So I thought... I don’t know, maybe you were the person that could help.” He ducks his head, voice quieter now. “But if this was dumb, I get it. I can go.”

Ben braces for rejection.

Instead, Jackson’s posture shifts, some of the sharpness softening. “Hey. I’m not blowing you off, alright?”

And then, almost too casually, just rough enough, Jackson adds, “If anything, Mr. Whitaker, you’ve got my full attention.”

Ben swears the temperature spikes. Jackson’s gaze tracks over him, slow, deliberate, borderline indecent, before landing on the binder in his lap. Ben’s fingers twitch, instinctively drawing it closer.

Jackson gestures toward the bookstore. “Maybe we should take this inside?” he says, low and easy, like it’s just a suggestion and that everything that happens next is in Ben’s hands. Like the faint possibility, of what, Ben isn’t even sure, doesn’t spark a confusing mix of panic and excitement in his stomach.

Jackson steps back to give Ben room, rubbing his gloved hands briskly. “Before I lose my best typing fingers to frostbite, preferably.”
