Blurb

Jesse Hunter is finally trying to be an adult, but it still feels like an act. His place on the town council is a sham. He’s rarely called on to do anything. His boyfriend is grieving the loss of his mother, and while everyone seems to think he’s doing a great job caring for Sean, Jesse feels like he’s more of a distraction than a real help.

March is shaping up to be a bad month. First, random chance leads him to the realization that the town’s recent trouble is his fault. Then new werewolves come into town, and it turns out they’re also Jesse’s responsibility. He feels like he may be at his breaking point, and he doesn’t want to drag his friends and loved ones down with him. But how will he handle it alone?

My Two Pennies Worth

I have to confess I'm running behind with this series.
So far I've read Blackbird In The Reeds which introduces us to the town of Rowan Harbor. In the pov of Devon, we slowly discover what is going on in the unusually superstitious town. Then Devon starts having some very strange dreams. I really enjoyed the concept of this town and the world built around it. The relationship is low key in comparison to solving the mystery, discovering what is actually going on in the town, and Devon learning a truth about himself. I can't say too much without giving it away.
If also read Wolf and the Holly, about Devon's childhood friend, Jesse. Jesse, is a werewolf and something happened in his past that has him questioning his wolf and his place in Rowan Harbor. Unlike Devon, who had no clue what's going on and so the reader feels they are discovering the truth with him, Jesse knows what his problem is but chooses not to share it with the reader. This leaves the reader at disadvantage. There is another mystery to be solved, this time an attack on an old friend of Devon and Jesse, but things seem to be leading up to a bigger story. Again the relationship is low key and more fated mates than anything.
I'm moving straight on to book three and will review the remaining books at some point next week.

Author Bio

Sam wrote her first fantasy epic with her best friend when she was ten. Like almost any epic fiction written by a ten year old, it was awful. She likes to think she’s improved since then, if only because she has better handwriting now.

If she’s not writing, she’s almost certainly either reading or lost down a Wikipedia rabbit hole while pretending to research for a novel.
